Massachusetts Bay Colony

Charlestown was one of a handful of early settlements, preceding Boston and originally encompassing large sections of Middlesex County. Thomas Graves was sent from England by the Massachusetts Bay Company in 1623, to plan out a township for new settlers. The Great House at Market Square became the seat of government.

Once a part of Charlestown, Somerville was incorporated as an independent town in 1842. Due to this fact it would be impossible to separate their histories, so I will be adding an area for the years when they were one.
